This is the entry in Scott's Journal for December 18th 1825. After several days and indeed weeks of mounting tension due to the evolving financial crisis in London Scott had a visitor on that morning which announced that he had failed financially and that The Crash was upon him. This is his entry in his Journal of that fatal morning.

Professor David W. Purdie is a Scottish-born academic and editor, Professor Emeritus at Hull University and Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh. He specialises in eighteenth-century history and philosophy, edits The Burns Encyclopaedia, has produced modern adaptations of Sir Walter Scott’s novels, and is a former chairman of the Club.
